Celebrating birth with Baptism

By: Elizabeth Ellis

When babies smile in their sleep, it is said to be a sign of talking to angels in their sleep. However, for us, we would smile just by looking at them. No one can resist the cuteness of babies with their adorable features. A baby would soften the stiffest heart. Having a new baby in the family is probably one of the most eventful times for the rest of the family.

The sins inflicted to all Adam’s children was the result of the consummation of the fruit from the forbidden tree of wisdom. Baptism is important to purify the baby from form this sin. Baptism is highly looked upon by Christians and the ritual also signifies the welcoming of the child as a member of the Church.

In the west, a baptism becomes as gathering for families and friends. Reception is therefore held in accord to the christening of baby. A lot like bridal showers, guests would bring gifts for the baby and in return the parents give out favors to the generous guests. This would all hopefully assist the mother with the new task. New mothers would sometimes get confused or not know where to start. Others would then come to the rescue giving her all sorts of tips and sometimes filled with superstitious beliefs.

Famous throughout the world, baby clothes would be the first item that a mother would receive. It is mostly wrapped and packed in a transparent box. Available mostly in pink for girls and blue for boys, it contains shirts, bodysuits, stockings, mittens and caps all made from the softest cotton around. In oriental culture, these pieces of clothing are snug inside a dim sum platter to give it a whole new look. Another popular trend is to wrap these clothes into flowers and roses. A bouquet of these creative and clever ideas would surely make a huge hit during the reception as the parents experience surprise and delight at the same time.

Apart from clothing, a baby requires other necessities too. It is never wrong to give the mother a full set of milk bottles and formulas. A new mother will appreciate this gift set a lot especially if she is not able to lactate herself. There are a few precautions on buying formulas for the baby. Unless you have sought medical advice from professionals, do not go around grabbing any formula which is the cheapest as some babies are allergic to some type of formulas. Do not be offended if you see your gift not used when you are invited for the baby’s 3rd birthday party. To top it all off, assemble the gifts in a gift basket and put in a few soft toys to really make this gift a great looking one.

In this event, it is only fair for the parents of the infant to distribute favors to the guests. Favors are a long time tradition in the western culture as it is a gesture of gratitude and appreciation. These thoughtful mementos are now seeping into other cultures, which is not unusual.

What are the types of favors that is best for baptism? Well, as babies are often related to angels, a cherub candle is one good option. Not only does it look beautiful, the candle can be useful when you need them. As for decoration, the candles are most beautiful.

Personalize the favors to give it the extra warmth. For example, for babies born in spring, a photo frame adorned with flowers with the baby’s photo inserted would make great favors. Attaching a personal note to favors is a great way to show your sincerity in giving out the favors.

It won’t be long until the babies grow up and gets involve with all sorts of mischief. Before that time arrives, you can just enjoy the happiness that the baby brings into the family. Always remember that babies are gifts form god and should be cherished even after they had passed baby’s phase.
