Life Is But A Dream

By: Bruce King

Ever drifting down the stream--
Lingering in the golden gleam--
Life, what is it but a dream?
- Lewis Carroll

When we sleep we dream, and when we wake up we are still dreaming.

Dreams seem pretty real while they are happening, then we wake up and realize, “Oh, it was just a dream!” The reason we know it was just a dream is because we woke up from it. How real would our “waking” life be if suddenly we were to wake up from it?

The reason things seem real in our dreams is because of the way we are perceiving it. It is perceived by our brains as real. What is difference between dreams and waking life? None, because it is still all perception in our heads.

You might say, “I know my waking state is real because I can feel it.” I would say, “No ‘you’ are not feeling it, your body is feeling it.” Or more precisely, the nerve cells in your body are feeling it and transmitting or sharing the information with your brain as electro-chemical signals. What we are experiencing is an interpretation of reality. Kind of like a TV signal from a television studio. Are we actually getting the actual reality of what is going on in the TV studio or just a small 2D piece of what is happening in front of the camera? This is similar to what is happening in our heads or our “TV signal receiver”.

Our reality is that who we think we are and what we think we see is all second hand information that has been converted into electrical signals so that we can experience “reality”. So, reality is really just a bunch of synapses firing in what seems to be our brains that we trust is telling us the truth.

You might also say, “ Well, I know it is real because other people are experiencing the same thing that I am.” I would ask, “How do you know that those other people are real?” After all, you are experiencing them the same way you are experiencing anything else in your “reality”. You could be dreaming them as well.

You see how it is impossible to measure our reality as real against anything in it. It would be like saying your dream is real because the other people in your dream are all in agreement about what is real.

This really brings up the big question, “How do we know that anything is real since we are completely immersed in what could be just another dream?”

This is what the great spiritual teachers of old have been telling us for eons.
