Chihuahuas make great pets. They have very keen hearing and will alert their master of any impending person or animal approaching or invading your space.

They are very much attached to one individual although do well with many family members.

Chihuahuas are considered lap dogs and they suit the name to a tee because they love to be on their master almost every moment of every day. You see many chihuahua masters carrying their little loved ones all over. One famous person who carries her chihuahua everywhere is Paris Hilton.

There are many people who do not understand this part of being a master of this type of breed until you have one of your own. They are very endearing and are full of their very own personality which is usually extremely complimentary to their master's personality.

Once you have your own you will see for yourself just how they attach themselves to you.. Everywhere you go, they go. They follow you like a little tiny shadow, a couple steps behind or beside you unless you are carrying them.

Some in the breed are extremely small and many people call them tea cup chihuahuas, but the kennels do not accept it as a valid designation. There are long hair and smooth hair chihuahuas and that's it.

Some breeders try very hard to breed the smallest possible as they seem to be the most popular, but the smaller they are the more vulnerable they are to sickness and weakness. What this means is that if you get one usually under 4 lbs you will have to take extreme care in handling and make sure they never get a cold draft.

This breed is normally hypoglycemic in nature and needs to have food and water available at all times. If you get one, or already have one you should make sure the dog knows exactly where it's food and water is and keep it in the same general area all the time. Keeping dry food and clean water is extremely essential and they will not engorge themselves once they realize that there will always be food and water where they can get at it at all times. There are other breeds that also will not engorge themselves, but need to be trained at a young age for it to be affective.

Now just like any other breed they need some discipline and consistency is key in any training. There are many different schools of thought in regards to dog obedience so look around if you are unsure as to what is okay and what is not okay.

Chihuahuas are fearless and will protect their master at the cost of their own life if you take care of them with love and proper care. If you need a true companion, then look no further than a chihuahua, they are the best!
