Should You Use A Bill Of Sale Form

By: Tony Potter

When purchasing or trading a second-hand car, it is wise to use an auto bill of sale form. A bill of sale gives the seller proof that the title for the vehicle has been legally transferred to a third party. For the person buying the vehicle, a bill of sale documents the transaction and is proof of purchase. It is necessary that each bill of sale form should include certain basic information. A thorough description of the vehicle including the vehicle identification number as well as the name and address of both the buyer and the seller should all be written down.

A bill of sale form needs to be provided before a vehicle can be registered in the name of the new owner in nearly every states. The main reason this is required is to record the vehicle purchase price for tax assessment as well as to document the odometer reading, which is used to counter odometer fraud.

A bill of sale form that does not provide all the stated information will most likely not be accepted and the vehicle will not be fit for registration.

Although there are one or two states that do not require a bill of sale form in order to finalise your vehicle registration, purchasers of used cars are still recommended to fill in such a form for their own protection and peace of mind.

Writing a bill of sale form will take only moments but will give the used car buyer security about their vehicle purchase for a long time to come.
